Como – A morning of training turned tragic for Josep Martinez, Inter's second goalkeeper. The 26-year-old Spanish player was involved in a serious car accident around 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, October 28, near Fenegrò, a few kilometers from the Appiano Gentile training center.

According to an initial reconstruction by the Carabinieri, the car driven by Martinez struck an 81-year-old man who was in a wheelchair. The impact was extremely violent: despite the swift intervention of the air ambulance and 118 paramedics, there was nothing that could be done for the elderly man. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, and the doctor could only pronounce him dead on the scene.

The causes of the accident are still being investigated by law enforcement.

One of the most popular theories at the moment is that the man, perhaps suffering from a sudden illness, lost control of the wheelchair, suddenly leaving the cycle path and crossing the road just as the Nerazzurri goalkeeper's car was approaching.

Martinez, visibly shocked, immediately stopped to provide first aid, collaborating with the Carabinieri in the subsequent stages. The Nerazzurri club, informed of the incident, expressed its sympathy to the victim's family, maintaining the utmost confidentiality regarding the matter.

The accident area, along a provincial road with moderate traffic but no barriers between the bike path and the road, was temporarily closed to allow for technical investigations. Investigators are also analyzing surveillance camera footage to clarify the precise circumstances of the collision.

An episode that shattered the tranquility of the Como town and the Inter Milan club, where the young goalkeeper arrived last summer with high expectations. The Fenegrò tragedy once again raises the issue of road safety and the protection of the most vulnerable, such as the elderly and people with disabilities.

It's truly sad that an accident like this happened. We hope law enforcement can clarify the motives. It's unfair that innocent people, especially an elderly person, are involved in such terrible things.
