Naples – Minutes of anguish and the fear of losing everything. The terrible experience of an elderly man from Vomero, victim of a cunning yet cruel phone scam that cost him €60.000, fortunately ended happily.
What saved the man's savings was the quick reflexes of Francesco, an officer at the Vomero Police Station, who recognized the signs of a scam and acted in a race against time.
The story begins when the elderly man receives a phone call. On the other end, a firm and authoritative voice introduces itself as a member of the Carabinieri. The scammer, using a well-established script, paints an alarming scenario: the victim's bank account is under attack, the target of a series of cyber frauds.
Here the psychological trap is sprung. To "avoid" the danger and allow law enforcement to begin "urgent investigations," the fake soldier convinces the elderly man to immediately wire the entire sum of €60.000 to a "safe" account indicated by the scammer. The man, frightened and caught off guard, carries out the banking transaction.
Immediately afterward, perhaps struck by doubt or realizing the strangeness of the request, the elderly man goes to the Vomero Police Station. It is there that he meets Officer Francesco. Listening to his excited story, the officer immediately realizes he is dealing with a classic "fake operator" scam.
Knowing that every second counts before the transfer becomes irrevocable, Francesco takes immediate action. He contacts the elderly person's bank, explains the ongoing fraud, and requests an immediate and urgent blocking of the transaction.
The officer's timely intervention proved decisive. The bank, alerted by the police, was able to intercept and reverse the transaction before the sum reached the criminals' accounts. The €60.000 were safe.
The elderly gentleman, hearing the news of his escape, breathed a huge sigh of relief. Visibly relieved, he warmly thanked Officer Francesco and all his colleagues at the station, expressing his deep gratitude to the State Police for saving his life savings from a heinous scam.
