Tensions are high in Avellino prison: a massive brawl erupts between Italian and foreign inmates.

The worst was averted thanks to the intervention of the Penitentiary Police. The Uilpa union reports: "The facility is overcrowded, with over 630 inmates for 500 places. We're at risk of paralysis."

Aavellino – Tensions are rising again at the Avellino Bellizzi Prison. Yesterday, November 12th, a violent altercation broke out in the "common" section, escalating into a massive brawl pitting numerous Italian and foreign inmates against each other.

The alarm was raised by Raffaele Troise, Head of the Gau Uilpa Penitentiary Police Secretariat of Avellino.

According to the union's reconstruction, the brawl involved a "significant number of inmates" for reasons that, at this time, remain unclear. The timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police officers, coordinated by the Surveillance and Management, was decisive. Despite the "significant difficulties" encountered in calming the situation and restoring order, the officers managed to avoid a "dramatic outcome" by staying on duty well beyond their normal working hours to stabilize the situation.

The shadow of overcrowding

The incident, however, didn't come as a bolt from the blue. Uilpa points the finger at the structural condition of the school, which threatens to undermine its daily efforts to maintain safety.

The real critical issue, Troise reports, is severe overcrowding: "Today, there are more than 630 inmates, compared to a regulated capacity of 500." This explosive situation is exacerbated by the fact that one section of the facility is currently closed, further increasing the pressure on the remaining areas.

"We are working daily to avoid new critical issues that could lead the Institute back to disastrous times," the union representative emphasizes. "But without measures to reduce user demand, the path we've taken seems to inevitably lead to renewed paralysis."

The appeal to the Administration

Faced with yet another alarm bell, the Uilpa Penitentiary Police Union is once again calling for urgent intervention. While praising "those who constantly work to ensure order and safety" in the Irpinia prison, the union is urging "greater attention" from the central administration.

The appeal is clear: "We ask for swift action to resolve the problem," Troise concludes, emphasizing that emergency management can no longer rely solely on the sacrifices of front-line staff.
