Caivano: Arsonist arrested thanks to environmental control room

Caivano - Technology as a weapon against pollution. And a recently enacted law that strengthens investigative powers in the areas most affected by toxic fires. This combination led to the first arrest in flagrante delicto in Caivano, an operation that marks a turning point in the fight against environmental crimes between Naples and Caserta.

A 57-year-old man from Acerra was arrested a few hours after the incident, caught on camera setting fire to 25 bags full of textile waste. Thousands of tons of waste burned in the open, creating a dense, dark cloud that spread to surrounding homes.

The images, intercepted by a dedicated video surveillance system, reached the NIPAAF (Environmental, Agri-food and Forestry Police Investigative Unit) and the Carabinieri of the Caivano station in real time.

The raid was triggered by the environmental control room activated in recent weeks, a nerve center that collects reports, information flows, and requests for intervention from the provinces of Naples and Caserta.

A control room that, combined with the new regulatory framework, allows investigators to continuously monitor high-risk areas and intervene even when the perpetrator attempts to disappear.

That's what the 57-year-old man allegedly attempted, caught on camera fanning the flames and then leaving the area in his SUV. Working with the control room, patrols reconstructed the vehicle's route, quickly identifying the owner.

The man was located at his home and arrested in flagrante delicto, as required by the new decree on environmental crimes. He is now under house arrest, awaiting trial.

The operation, emphasized the Carabinieri of the Campania Forestry Region and the Naples Provincial Command, is a concrete example of how the integration of updated regulations, technology, and territorial coordination can overcome the limitations of traditional flagrante delicto.

And above all, how a concerted strategy can truly impact one of the most critical fronts of the Land of Fires: stopping those who poison the territory, often in secret and with impunity.
