NAPLES – The countdown to Euro 2032 is accelerating, and the future of the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is once again at the center of national debate. Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi is issuing a message that sounds like an ultimatum: if Naples wants to be among the cities hosting the competition, the city and the Italian club must reach a concrete agreement, and do so as quickly as possible.
On the sidelines of an America's Cup event, Abodi clarified that the process for appointing the commissioner is ongoing, but that his role will be merely to facilitate a political and operational process that depends solely on the municipal administration and the club. "Time is running out," the minister reiterated, noting that the window of opportunity is narrowing week by week.
The issue, however, isn't limited to the European Championships. According to Abodi, the Maradona is now a stadium that speaks more of the past than of the future. The need for a modern, functional, accessible stadium capable of hosting a team with national and international ambitions is an inevitable step in revitalizing the city's entire sports project.
The government—the minister emphasized—intends to promote a new generation of stadiums, but the key remains the ability of the City and SSC Napoli to overcome divisions and develop a shared vision. The two agendas, he said, have so far run separately, but they must converge quickly if the city wants to transform Euro 2032 from a possibility into a reality.
