giugliano – As the city prepares to decorate its shop windows for the upcoming holidays, another ruthless "Christmas tax" is being imposed by racketeering lords in the name of the Mallardo clan.

It is against this pre-Christmas extortion ring that the Carabinieri of the Giugliano Company have struck a heavy blow, executing six precautionary custody orders this morning.

The operation, launched at dawn on a warrant from the investigating judge of the Naples Court and coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, resulted in five people being arrested and another placed under house arrest. The six, believed to be affiliated with or supporting the Mallardo clan, are seriously suspected of mafia association, extortion, and illegal possession of weapons.

According to investigators, the gang systematically targeted shopkeepers in the Giugliano area, taking advantage of the peak customer influx period to enforce its extortion demands.

The threats, according to the charges, were not only verbal: on more than one occasion, the businessmen were allegedly intimidated by brandishing firearms, to more quickly subdue their resistance.

But the investigation, stemming from the prosecutor's office's inquiries, revealed an even more complex and ruthless mechanism. According to the findings, the proceeds from the extortion rackets did not end up in the pockets of individual extortionists, but flowed into a "common fund" of the organization.

This slush fund, meticulously managed, served a specific purpose: to provide a "support fund" for the families of imprisoned members. In practice, the racket guaranteed the wives and children of incarcerated bosses a veritable monthly stipend, an illegal subsidy to maintain support for the clan and buy loyalty, transforming the merchants' protection money into a social safety net for the underworld.

A system that shows all its predatory power precisely as Christmas approaches, when families' economic needs, including those linked to the Camorra, become more pressing.
