Naples – A night of pure frenzy rocked the Fuorigrotta neighborhood, transformed, according to residents' complaints, into a veritable open-air racetrack. The toll was dramatic: two accidents involving overturned cars occurred within a short distance of each other, in the dead of night.
The first accident occurred on Via Leopardi, near the so-called "Serpentone." A citizen sent MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli a video showing the overturned car, from which, he claimed, several youths had emerged in a clearly altered state.
Shortly afterward, a second, even more serious crash occurred: another car overturned near the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, on the Distinti side. Firefighters had to intervene immediately to extract the driver, who, according to initial reports, was seriously injured.
Maradona's area: a no man's land at night
The area around the stadium is no stranger to incidents of this kind. It has long been the focus of complaints from Europa Verde and exasperated residents, who report that, especially on weekends, the area becomes a gathering place for young people who use it for dangerous displays: they speed at breakneck speeds in cars, do wheelies on scooters, and perform all sorts of stunts, heedless of the danger to themselves and others.
Faced with this escalation of street violence, political representatives and citizens say enough.
"This is madness. We must stop all this before we mourn more victims," thunder MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and Rosario Pugliese, member of the Europa Verde Regional Executive. "We have long been denouncing what happens every night, especially on weekends, in Fuorigrotta. Hordes of young people, often minors, occupy much of the neighborhood to commit driving crimes. Those who pay the heaviest price are the residents, who are now afraid even to walk near their homes."
To send a strong signal and demand immediate action from the institutions, Europa Verde and the citizens will take to the streets this evening. At 21:30 PM, Borrelli and Pugliese, along with neighborhood residents, will hold a protest outside the Maradona Stadium.
"We need decisive action from the Police Chief and the Prefect, including a permanent presence of law enforcement officers to stop these young drifters who are endangering everyone's safety," conclude the two Europa Verde representatives, launching a desperate appeal for the restoration of law and safety on Neapolitan streets.
