Naples: Prototype Explosion on Ring Road: Six on Trial

Naples—Two lives shattered, a failed trial, and a series of unheeded warnings. A year and a half after the prototype explosion on the Naples ring road that cost the lives of Maria Vittoria Prati and her young trainee Fulvio Filace, the case comes to trial. Preliminary hearing judge Ambra Cerabona has indicted six people on charges of manslaughter.

According to the Naples Prosecutor's Office, the six defendants allegedly ignored clear signs of critical issues within the "Life Safe" project, a research initiative aimed at developing electric cars powered by renewable energy sources.

The accident dates back to June 23, 2023, when a Volkswagen Polo prototype, engaged in a road test, caught fire and exploded after a few minutes, killing the CNR researcher and her collaborator.

The trial will include Gianfranco Rizzo, 73, a former professor at the University of Salerno and the project's scientific director; Matteo Marino, former director of the company "e-ProInn srl"; Mecaprom Technologies Corporation Italia srl ​​employees Enrico Bianconi, Claudia Bonaccorso, and Gregorio Iuzzolino; and Francesco Tiano, a researcher in the University of Salerno's Engineering Department. The initial hearing is scheduled for January 20.

The families of the victims have joined the civil action: Filace's family, represented by Fabio Russo, and Dr. Prati's family, represented by Ivan Filippelli. The National Research Council (CNR) and the University of Salerno are also civil parties, representing all the defendants except Rizzo.

The investigation coordinated by prosecutor Manuela Persico revealed disturbing details: numerous internal emails, acquired by the judicial police, reported problems with the lithium battery from the early stages of the project, a component that was then installed in the car without adequate testing.

According to the prosecution's reconstruction, the prototype was delivered to Professor Prati without informing her of the known critical issues, thus violating the most basic safety regulations.

The trial will have to clarify whether the enthusiasm for a “green” project cost two human lives due to technical negligence and documented omissions.
