Naples – A typical afternoon of study yesterday turned into an action-packed scene at the Federico II University on Via Porta di Massa. The order and academic calm of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy were shattered by a cloud of pepper spray, apparently sprayed "as a prank" by a twenty-year-old student.

The gesture, more than a prank, took on the appearance of an emergency evacuation. The irritant gas spread rapidly through the corridors, generating a wave of panic. Coughing, watering eyes, and a collective rush to the exit created tense moments, with staff and other students caught off guard by the sudden "chemical warfare" among the books.

The alarm reached the Carabinieri of Naples Central, who promptly responded to the scene to restore calm and ascertain the facts. The investigations reconstructed the incident and identified the alleged perpetrator of the far-fetched prank.

The young woman, a 20-year-old university student, was subsequently reported for her reckless act. A bittersweet ending to what should have been a prank, but which instead ended with a judicial decision.

Fortunately, despite the chaos and disruption caused, the incident had no impact on public health. According to initial reports, none of the students or employees present required medical attention, with symptoms limited to a temporary annoyance.

The episode, however, leaves its mark and raises questions about the perception of boundaries, even within a place of culture and education like the university. A "prank" that could have been costly, but instead cost the student a complaint, a bad memory, and a lesson perhaps far more important than those found in textbooks.

It's strange how something that was supposed to be funny has become so serious. I don't think pepper spraying was a good idea, but sometimes people don't think about the consequences of their actions.
