Campania is bracing for further deterioration in weather conditions. The regional Civil Protection Department has extended and raised the alert to Orange level for much of the region, with particular attention to the most exposed coastal areas.
The new warning will be in effect from 11:59 PM today until 11:59 PM tomorrow, Monday, November 25.
The highest criticality level will concern the following areas:
1 – Campanian plain, Naples, islands and Vesuvian area
2 – Upper Volturno and Matese
3 – Sorrento and Amalfi Peninsula, Sarno Mountains, Picentini Mountains
5 – Tusciano and Alto Sele
6 – Sele Plain and Upper Cilento
The Yellow alert remains in effect for the rest of the region for another 24 hours.
Forecast: heavy rain and strengthening winds
According to the Civil Protection Department, a significant intensification of the phenomena is expected: rainfall in the form of showers or thunderstorms, locally very intense, capable of affecting large portions of the regional territory.
Winds will blow strongly from the southwest, with sudden gusts; they are expected to ease by tomorrow afternoon. Seas will be rough, with a risk of storm surges along exposed coastlines.
The risks: landslides, floods and hydrogeological criticalities
The worsening weather scenario brings with it a series of potential critical issues:
Shallow landslides and rapid mud and debris flows due to the instability of water-saturated slopes;
Heavy runoff and possible soil erosion with the formation of sinkholes;
Flooding of underground rooms and street levels;
Rising watercourses with potential flooding, aggravated by silting and obstructions;
Water flow on the roadway with risk of sewer backflow;
Falling rocks and damage to public greenery, roofs, and temporary structures caused by wind and strong waves.
Authorities are recommending caution when traveling, especially in areas already vulnerable from a hydrogeological perspective, and are urging citizens to follow official updates in the coming hours.
