Naples – Tomorrow, the "La Porta del Parco" Auditorium in Bagnoli will be transformed into the stage for a high-profile scientific debate on the Phlegraean Fields, one of the most studied and monitored volcanic systems in the world.
The event, organized by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will focus on the results of the LOVE-CF project (Linking surface Observables to sub-Volcanic plumbing-system: a multidisciplinary approach for Eruption forecasting at Campi Flegrei caldera, Italy), an ambitious research program that aims to decipher the secrets of the Campanian caldera.
The proceedings opened with institutional greetings from Fabio Florindo, President of the INGV; Nello Musumeci, Minister of Civil Protection and Maritime Policies; Paola Pagliara, Director of the Risk Forecasting and Prevention Office of the Department of Civil Protection; and Stefano Branca, Director of the INGV Volcanoes Department. This distinguished panel of speakers underscored the strategic importance of monitoring and research in the region.
The day will be punctuated by thematic sessions coordinated by INGV experts, who will analyze the current state of the caldera through volcanological, petrological, geochemical, seismological, geodetic, and gravimetric observations. Lucia Pappalardo, director of the Vesuvius Observatory and scientific director of the LOVE-CF project, will present an updated overview of the volcanic system and illustrate the project's objectives, which aims to improve the ability to forecast eruptive events.
The day concluded with a roundtable discussion moderated by the director of the INGV Volcanoes Department, dedicated to the scientific understanding of the Campi Flegrei, its monitoring, and the future of research. This is a crucial event to understand how science is preparing to manage one of Europe's most complex volcanoes.
