San Cipriano – A quiet afternoon on the way home turned into an unforgettable tragedy. It happened yesterday, around 14:00 PM, on the provincial road from Salerno to Giffoni Valle Piana, the scene of a fatal accident that claimed the life of Pietro Salzano, 75, a well-known and respected Giffoni resident.
The man was riding his bicycle when, in Campigliano, in the municipality of San Cipriano, he was violently struck by a car. The impact was fatal: according to initial reports, the cyclist hit his head violently first against the vehicle and then on the asphalt, dying virtually instantly within minutes of the crash.
The driver of the car was a 64-year-old man, a resident of Salerno, who immediately stopped to provide first aid and alert the law enforcement authorities.
An ambulance and a Red Cross unit from Giffoni Valle Piana rushed to the scene. Unfortunately, there was nothing more that could be done for the 75-year-old: the paramedics could only pronounce him dead.
At the same time, Carabinieri patrols from the Salerno Company, under the command of Major Antonio Corvino, intervened. The officers immediately closed the road to traffic to allow for the necessary investigations, which are necessary to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident and determine any liability.
The driver, as is standard practice in these cases, underwent drug and alcohol tests to assess his mental and physical condition at the time of the accident. The results are expected in the next few hours.
According to initial information, which is still being examined by investigators, the car was overtaking when it struck the cyclist. One hypothesis is that the 75-year-old may have moved slightly just as the vehicle was approaching, making the impact inevitable. The driver, as is appropriate, could soon be charged with vehicular homicide.
The victim's car and bicycle were placed under judicial seizure. The magistrate on duty at the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, informed of the incident, ordered the body seized and transferred to the morgue of the "San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona" hospital in Salerno.
An autopsy will most likely be performed in the coming days. Furthermore, it is possible that the judicial authorities will appoint a team of technical experts to conduct further investigations into the dynamics of the accident, particularly to precisely determine the vehicle's speed at the time of the collision.
