SALERNO – A flash mob in defense of Fabio Cagnazzo, accused of complicity in mafia-related murder in the investigation into the killing of Pollica mayor Angelo Vassallo, has sparked an institutional controversy. The initiative took place on November 14th in front of the Salerno Courthouse, with the participation—according to the Vassallo Foundation—of current or former Carabinieri officers.
The Foundation deemed the image "strange and disturbing." This morning, it wrote to Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Carabinieri General Commander Salvatore Luongo, and Salerno Prefect Francesco Esposito, requesting explanations and recalling that the Ministry of the Interior, along with the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Justice, is a civil party in the trial against Cagnazzo.

The letter raises institutional and symbolic questions: state officials demonstrating for a high-ranking official accused in a premeditated murder case, right in front of the trial venue. The Foundation also invokes the tradition of the Areopagus, the ancient Greek "sacred" court for voluntary homicide, to underscore the moral weight of the context.
Regarding the Vassallo case, fifteen years after the murder of the fisherman mayor, the organization led by the family continues to denounce behavior deemed inappropriate or obstructive, recalling the complaints it has received over the years. "It is regrettable to see men of the State continue to sow thorns," the Foundation writes, requesting clarity on the possible authorization of the flash mob and reiterating that "the State is barefoot," and therefore vulnerable, when it fails to protect its symbols.
