Salerno — They also came from other regions, from Lazio to Sicily, to reiterate a message clearly displayed on their T-shirts: "I stand with Fabio Cagnazzo." A large group of friends, supporters, and former colleagues of the Carabinieri colonel under investigation for the murder of Angelo Vassallo, the fisherman-mayor killed in 2010, gathered this morning at the entrances to Salerno's Judicial Center.
While the preliminary hearing continued inside the Palace of Justice, protesters outside held a banner reading: "Truth and justice also for Fabio Cagnazzo." This initiative, they explained, was not intended to oppose the search for the truth about Vassallo's murder, but to support a man they believe has been unjustly implicated.
"We're here to show our support for Fabio and demand a truthful trial," said one of the friends present at the rally. "We are absolutely convinced of his innocence. He's the first to demand justice, not only for himself, but also for Mayor Vassallo. We're talking about a man of the institutions, a colonel who arrested hundreds of fugitives: he cannot be made the scapegoat for this affair."
Among those present was the officer's sister, who remained silent but stood by the protesters throughout the morning. Meanwhile, Antonio Vassallo, son of the slain mayor, entered the courthouse while the protest was still underway. It was a scene that captures the tension and sensitivity of a proceeding that, years later, continues to divide, question, and demand definitive answers on one of the darkest chapters in recent Italian judicial history.
