Milan - The semester-long system for admission to Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine is cracking. After the exam session concluded, the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) had to rush to conduct a massive online and social media survey. The goal was to uncover any traces of the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology exams recently taken by 55.000 aspiring doctors at 44 universities.
The checks, performed with a sophisticated mass analysis tool (a crawler), sifted through millions of online contents. The result, while reassuring, raises the possibility of potential post-examination irregularities.
The suspension and the investigation
The Ministry's investigation has so far denied the publication of any exam forms during the tests. The incriminating images that sparked the alarm were found to be only two application forms—the so-called "rough copies"—released online in the late afternoon of Thursday, November 20, after the exam sessions had concluded throughout Italy.
The photographs, which do not include the official answer sheets, are attributable to tests carried out at the Federico II University of Naples and the University of Catania.
Cancellation imminent and Postal Police investigation
Although the dissemination only occurred after the fact, there is zero tolerance. The two incriminated tests are still anonymous, but the Ministry has already established the procedure: as soon as the tasks are matched with names, the related tests will be canceled in accordance with current regulations, identifying the candidates who took and disseminated the material.
But the investigation doesn't stop there. The investigation also uncovered several posts and messages in which candidates candidly stated they had cheated during the test. This material was immediately forwarded to the Postal Police, who will be tasked with identifying the authors and verifying whether their admissions actually reflect irregularities that occurred during the exam sessions.
The Ministry, while downplaying the alarm—two poor results out of a total of 160.000 applications—remains vigilant to ensure the integrity and transparency of the selection process.
