Naples – A severe weather system is preparing to hit Campania. The regional Civil Protection Department has declared a yellow-level weather alert, effective from midnight tonight, Monday, November 17, and for the next 24 hours, until 23:59 PM tomorrow, Tuesday, November 18.
The severe weather, which according to the Operational Center's assessments could develop into a shower or thunderstorm, threatens to unleash very heavy rainfall across large portions of the region. The hydrogeological criticality alert applies to almost the entire region, with the exception of Alta Irpina, Sannio, and Tanagro.
Risks for the territory
The consequences on the ground, as reported in a note from the Civil Protection Department, could be significant. The scenario includes:
Possible flooding in urban and non-urban areas.
A sudden rise in water levels.
Water flowing along the roads, posing a traffic hazard.
Landslides and rockfall from the most unstable slopes.
Emergency measures
In light of the forecast, the Civil Protection Department has issued a circular to all affected municipalities, ordering the immediate activation of their Municipal Operations Centers (COCs). Administrations are required to implement "all structural and non-structural measures" to prevent and mitigate the effects, in line with local emergency plans. Particular attention must be paid to monitoring public green spaces—to prevent the falling of trees or branches—and to constantly monitoring updates from the Regional Operations Room.
With an alert of this magnitude, the rescue and prevention machinery is already in motion, while citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution throughout Tuesday.
