Paralyzing traffic, crumbling infrastructure, and a worrying series of serious accidents are turning one of the busiest arteries in the Neapolitan hinterland into a veritable high-risk zone. Raffaele Marrone, president of Confapi Napoli, is sounding the alarm, pointing to years of neglect and promising a concrete turnaround.
"The central highway is a vital infrastructure for the northern area of Naples and can no longer be left in precarious, degraded, and unsafe conditions," Marrone denounces. "We're talking about an area that needs revitalization, that has great potential, and that finally deserves concrete, coordinated interventions."
An emergency that slows down development
The situation is critical from every perspective. Daily traffic jams paralyze traffic, while the road's structural deterioration amplifies the risks for those who use it. But it is above all the escalation of road accidents—too often with tragic consequences—that highlights the gravity of the problem. "When a road becomes the recurring scene of such dramatic incidents, it means we are facing a structural criticality that can no longer be avoided," warns the president of Confapi.
The consequences don't just affect residents. The inefficiency of the road system is undermining the local productive fabric, pushing businesses to seek alternative locations in areas perceived as safer and more functional. "Lack of safety and inefficiency weigh on workers and residents every day and accelerate the exodus of businesses to more reliable areas," explains Marrone.
Confapi's plan: concrete proposals in December
To reverse the trend, Confapi Napoli has decided to move from words to action. During its December meeting, the association will present an in-depth study dedicated to the enhancement and revitalization of the central axis. The document will contain a package of technical proposals and operational solutions designed to transform the route into a modern, safe, and efficient infrastructure.
"We can't just plug the emergency," Marrone emphasizes with determination. "We need a long-term strategy that transforms this artery into a development driver, not a weak point."
The mobilization of citizens
Confapi's battle is part of a growing public outcry. A citizen petition launched in recent weeks is gathering signatures calling for increased security along the route. The document sends a clear signal: citizens are demanding protection and a greater institutional presence.
"This area no longer wants to be considered a forgotten suburb," Marrone concludes. "There are businesses here that are resilient, investing, and looking to the future. But without adequate infrastructure, without safe and efficient mobility, there will be no real growth."
