Naples - The extraordinary services ordered by the Naples Police Headquarters to curb the rampant drug trafficking phenomenon, which has plagued the city's alleys and squares for years, continue unabated.
And last night, in one of the hottest areas of the historic center, officers pulled off a decisive move: the arrest of a 25-year-old Moroccan man, known to law enforcement for his criminal record and without a valid residence permit.
The operation, conducted by the Vicariate-Mercato Police Station, took place right in the heart of the Market, on Via Nolana, a street that is a symbol of vitality but also of criminal shadows.
It was just after evening when the police car spotted the young man in the company of a small group of people, engaged in a furtive and suspicious conversation.
The 25-year-old, noticing the presence of the men in uniform, didn't hesitate for a moment: he attempted a hasty escape, zigzagging between passersby and the still crowded market stalls.
But the officers' reaction was swift. He was stopped a few meters away and searched on the spot, revealing an unmistakable arsenal: 151 tablets of a drug classified as a narcotic or psychotropic substance—likely an opioid or an anxiolytic abused for its euphoric effects, the kind of "magic pill" circulating in underground circles to alter the mind and body.
At his side, moreover, was 70 euros in small denomination bills, the typical "proceeds" of a day's work as a pusher, ready to be reinvested in the business. For the young man, there was no escape.

Arrested on charges of illegal possession of narcotics, he was taken to the police station for formalities. The prosecutor on duty validated the arrest, and the 25-year-old now awaits trial: his illegal immigration status further aggravates the situation, opening the door to deportation once he has served his sentence.
This incident is not an isolated one, but is part of a broader strategy by the Naples Police Headquarters, which in recent months has intensified operations in high-risk areas such as the Rione Sanità, the Spanish Quarters, and the Mercato itself.
In the last four months alone, anti-drug operations have led to over 200 arrests and the seizure of kilograms of hashish, cocaine, and synthetic pills, amid a surge in the use of overused psychotropic drugs among young people, posing public health risks that authorities continue to raise alarm about.
Via Nolana, with its streets crowded by day and shady by night, remains a hotbed of activity: here, amidst the market's folklore and the shadow of the Camorra, drug dealing blends in with the crowd.
Investigations are continuing to identify the 25-year-old's accomplices, such as his suppliers, clients, and those on whose behalf he dealt drugs, with the hope that this raid is only the beginning of a larger bust.
