Ruviano - A quiet morning turned into a waking nightmare for an 83-year-old woman from Ruviano, in the Caserta province, who found herself the target of a phone scam using fear as the main weapon. This well-conceived, almost theatrical, plan was foiled only thanks to the prompt and decisive interception by the Carabinieri of the local station.
The incident occurred yesterday, Friday, November 28, 2025. A 45-year-old man, originally from Naples and with a long criminal record, was suspiciously wandering around the streets of the small town in a Citroën C3. His goal was macabre: to exploit the 83-year-old's vulnerability and fear to extort cash and valuables from her.
The staging: daughter arrested and shocking request
The scam's script was the usual, cynical, and tried-and-true one: the criminal posed as a lawyer and, in alarming tones, informed the victim that her daughter had been involved in a serious car accident. The threat was explicit and intended to paralyze any logical reaction: if she didn't immediately hand over the sum of €6.000 or valuable gold jewelry, her relative would be arrested.
The Carabinieri's lightning intervention
Fortunately, the vigilance and prompt action of the military, engaged in a comprehensive patrol of the area, made the difference. The man was spotted and apprehended during a routine check before he could reach the elderly woman's home.

During their investigation, the Carabinieri were quick to overhear a phone conversation between the scammer and his accomplice, in which he explicitly referred to collecting money and jewelry from the victim. Having become certain of the attempted scam, the officers detained the 45-year-old and rushed to the elderly woman.
The 83-year-old, still in shock and on the verge of giving in to the request, was immediately reassured and, once the moment of panic had passed, was able to recount the entire dramatic story.
The repeat offender, taken to the police station, was charged at liberty with attempted aggravated fraud. The Carabinieri are continuing their investigations with the aim of identifying and bringing to justice the accomplice who orchestrated the phone call.

It was a very unfortunate incident and it makes us reflect on how some people take advantage of the vulnerability of the elderly. It's important that checks continue to be carried out and that law enforcement agencies are always ready to intervene in similar situations to protect citizens.
