Night – The narrow, labyrinthine alleys of the Spanish Quarter attracted the attention of the Carabinieri last night. The Naples Central Company orchestrated an extraordinary patrol of the area, an operation aimed at quelling hotbeds of lawlessness.
The result? Two arrests, a daring escape that involved running over officers, multiple charges, and a flurry of fines. At the center of the raid were two opposing but equally determined individuals who defied the law. The first, a 59-year-old Neapolitan man with a history of repeat offenses, was arrested pursuant to a judicial order.
Not content to surrender, he attempted to escape: ignoring the "Halt!" shouted by the soldiers, he accelerated in his car, hitting one of the Carabinieri in an act that almost resulted in tragedy.
Even while handcuffed, he continued to struggle violently, causing minor injuries.

The second arrest is no less serious, involving a 63-year-old local man, a well-known face in the drug dealing underworld. Just as he was closing a sale of a dose of narcotics to an unsuspecting buyer, he spotted the patrol and decided to take a chance.
Accelerating at full speed, he ran over officers while trying to escape into the alleys, but the Carabinieri didn't give up: they identified him and reported him at large. A 50-year-old man caught illegally parking was also reported. The same fate befell a 19-year-old man riding a large motorcycle, without a license and looking as if he were tempting fate at every turn.
Overall, the reports recorded 29 traffic violations and the seizure of three vehicles, a direct blow to the heart of petty crime on two and four wheels. But the Carabinieri have not neglected public health.
With the support of local health personnel, they inspected two businesses, identifying hygiene deficiencies that could become ticking time bombs. Numerous remedial measures were issued, and a €2 administrative fine rained down on one establishment for serious violations: a wake-up call for business owners who, between coffees and croissants, forget basic rules. Finally, three people were reported to the Prefecture for drug users.

The Carabinieri operation in the Spanish Quarters appears to have been effective, but there are too many areas that need improvement. Land management must be more careful to avoid these problems. We hope the authorities continue to work in this direction.
