Avellino – Using a smartphone hidden in his cell, he allegedly tormented the widow of the man he killed. This is the disturbing development that emerged from searches conducted by the Carabinieri Investigative Unit of the Avellino Provincial Command at the Antimo Graziano prison.

The operation, ordered by the Irpinia Prosecutor's Office, involves 18 people accused of illegally using phones and SIM cards inside the penitentiary.

The investigation, launched in February 2025, aims to dismantle a clandestine communications network that allowed several inmates to maintain contact with the outside world, surf the web, and use social media.

From their cells, using unauthorized devices, some were able to manage online profiles, send messages, and even threaten acquaintances and family members of the victims.

Investigators seized electronic devices and SIM cards registered to fictitious names or people who do not exist in Italy. Analysis of phone records and digital reports revealed a veritable parallel communications system, nicknamed a "connected cell." The social media profiles maintained by the inmates also contained images and posts of investigative relevance.

Among the most serious cases is that of a man convicted of murder who, while behind bars, allegedly continued to stalk his victim's wife with hateful text messages and calls. His charges have been aggravated: in addition to the unlawful use of communication devices, he now faces charges of stalking.

The joint operation by the Carabinieri and the Penitentiary Police, which extended to the cells still occupied by the suspects, aims to put an end to an increasingly widespread phenomenon in the Italian prison system: covert communication, which transforms prisons into hubs of criminal activity with invisible but effective connections.
