On the afternoon of Thursday, November 6, the Carabinieri of the Villa Literno station conducted a targeted operation on the outskirts of the municipality, intensifying extraordinary checks against illegal waste dumping.

The operation, supported by municipal technicians, led to the discovery of an illegal sheet metal warehouse, built on agricultural land without any authorization, and transformed into an uncontrolled storage facility for hazardous waste.

A 72-year-old man from Naples has been charged at large with unauthorized waste management and illegal construction. Inside the facility, investigators found tons of worn tires, plastic materials, and various debris, some classified as toxic to the environment and public health.

The operation, part of a broader campaign ordered by the Caserta Provincial Carabinieri Command, is part of the "Land of Fires," the area between Caserta and Naples known for decades for systematic pollution due to illegal dumping. The site was immediately placed under criminal seizure and placed in judicial custody, with the Judicial Authority notified to proceed with its investigation.

Further investigations are underway to reconstruct the origin of the waste and the construction methods of the structure, which may have contributed to the pollution of the soil and local aquifers.

This discovery is not isolated: the area continues to suffer the consequences of illegal practices that undermine agriculture and the health of residents, with an increase in cancers and respiratory diseases documented in recent years.

The Carabinieri, in collaboration with municipal offices and environmental authorities such as ARPA Campania, will maintain high levels of vigilance to prevent repeat offenses. This incident underscores the urgent need for more effective action against environmental crime, with potential implications for the cleanup of the entire area and severe penalties for those responsible.

The Carabinieri operation was a good initiative, but I don't know if it will be enough to solve the pollution problem. We need more controls and stricter laws to stop polluters. We hope the authorities take effective measures.
