A pile of waste has become a toxic blaze in the heart of Portici, Naples. The arson attack broke out on the night between Saturday and Sunday, in the middle of a shopping center, poisoning the air residents breathe with dioxins, furans, and heavy metals.

The flames devoured plastic, rubber, and unsorted materials piled up on the sidewalk, transforming an act of illegality into an attack on public health.

The report reached Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli last night, who released a video and a citizen's account. The images show the fire raging just meters from the shops, in a densely populated area where impunity seems to reign supreme.

"What happened is unacceptable and deeply alarming," thundered Borrelli, along with Europa Verde city councilor Aldo Agnello. The two denounced a system that allows a few criminals to deface the decorum, damage private property, and above all poison the community. "We cannot tolerate such a populated area being poisoned by those acting completely illegally," they added.

The MP calls for immediate intervention by law enforcement. "They should immediately acquire the images from the surveillance cameras in the commercial area. Those responsible for this reckless act must be identified and rigorously prosecuted." The fear, however, is that even if the perpetrators are uncovered, the damage to residents' health is already underway.
