Naples – A multi-million dollar fraud against the state, based on fake medical conditions and false certificates. This is what the Naples Financial Police discovered during an investigation coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, which culminated today with the execution of a precautionary seizure order issued by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations of the Court of Naples. Eight people are under investigation, charged with aggravated fraud against the state.

According to investigators from the Economic and Financial Police Unit, the suspects allegedly obtained disability pensions and attendance allowances from INPS without meeting the legal requirements. The estimated damage to the public coffers amounts to €1.997.482.

The investigation began with the testimony of a cooperating witness, who allegedly revealed the existence of an illicit scheme based on the falsification of medical certificates and the complicity of individuals who, despite not suffering from serious illnesses, had received benefits and allowances for years. Subsequent documentary checks conducted by the GICO (Organized Crime Investigation Group) confirmed that some beneficiaries had never undergone any medical examination by the competent commissions.

In light of the evidence gathered, the investigating judge ordered the precautionary seizure of the movable and immovable assets attributable to the suspects, up to the amount of the sums deemed unduly received. The measure, which also includes confiscation of the equivalent amount, aims to recover the entire amount of the fraud and prevent further asset loss.

The operation represents a new blow to the phenomenon of fraud in the public assistance sector, a scourge that for years has diverted resources intended for citizens in genuine need.

It's incredible how people still manage to defraud the government this way. The law needs to be stricter and checks need to be more frequent, otherwise nothing will be solved and the problem will continue.
