Giugliano – He wasn't begging, he was demanding a tax. A tax on food, collected with the constant threat of delayed but certain violence: "Either you give me what I ask, or the men will destroy your car."

Thus ended, in the parking lot of a supermarket in Via Pigna, the criminal career of a 23 year old resident in the Roma camp in Via Carrafiello, arrested by the Carabinieri while attempting yet another heist. Adding to the drama was the presence of her two children, aged 8 and 11, sitting in the back seat of the Fiat Punto, silent spectators of their mother's threats.

It all happened during a routine territorial patrol. Officers from the Giugliano Company's Mobile Radio Section were patrolling commercial areas to prevent robberies when they were caught by a suspicious scene in the supermarket parking lot.

A woman in a Fiat Punto was arguing heatedly with the manager of the business. Upon seeing the Carabinieri patrol car, the driver attempted an evasive maneuver to quickly drive away, but was immediately stopped.

A year of terror on the shelves

The reconstruction of events, which emerged immediately after the arrest, revealed a disturbing scenario that went far beyond the single argument. This was not an isolated incident, but the culmination of an ordeal that had lasted approximately twelve months. The 23-year-old had established a veritable regime of psychological terror against the supermarket's manager and employees.

The scheme was well-tested: the woman would locate the workers' private cars, monitor them, and then use this information as extortion leverage. The threat was clear: if they didn't meet her demands for free food, "the men"—unidentified figures but evoked as a violent force—would intervene to trash the cars parked outside.

For a whole year, fearing reprisals on their assets, the victims had given in, living in constant fear of his visits.

Faced with the evidence and the testimonies gathered, the woman was arrested and charged with attempted extortion. She was transferred to Secondigliano prison, where she is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities.

The incident also had immediate repercussions on the family. The two children, found in the car used to commit the crime, were released to their father, while the police urgently activated the Giugliano Municipality's social services to monitor the family's situation.

The appeal of the Army

The incident, unfortunately not isolated in complex areas like the hinterland north of Naples, has prompted the Carabinieri of the Giugliano Company to launch an appeal to the public. They urge not to submit in silence: anyone who is the victim of similar requests or extortion is urged to call 112 or go to the nearest Carabinieri station. The end of the nightmare for the Via Pigna employees demonstrates that reporting the incident and ensuring the presence of law enforcement in the area are the only effective antidotes to bullying.

This article is thought-provoking about how some people exploit the vulnerability of others. It's alarming to see how a mother can involve her children in such dangerous situations. Society must do more to protect victims of extortion.
