Naples - An unprecedented crackdown on the illegal production and sale of fireworks. This is the outcome of an inspection conducted by the Prefecture of Naples, which revealed an alarming situation: nearly half of the province's licensed factories operate in violation of safety regulations.
The checks, carried out between 2024 and January 2025, resulted in heavy fines and criminal charges.
The balance of the controls
The Territorial Technical Commission for Explosive Substances inspected all 13 authorized factories and over 30 retail outlets. The results were dramatic: for six of the 13 factories, the competent authorities sent a report of crime to the Prosecutor's Office, finding violations serious enough to constitute a crime.
These businesses were given license suspensions ranging from 5 days to 3 months. The same fate befell 16 retail stores, whose licenses were suspended for periods ranging from 15 to 30 days.
Holiday Strategy
The offensive doesn't stop there. In view of the upcoming Christmas holidays, a meeting of the Committee for Public Order and Security held on November 7th planned a coordinated strategy.
Around the table, chaired by Prefect Michele di Bari, sat the heads of the Public Prosecutor's Offices of Naples, Torre Annunziata, Nola, and North Naples, along with the commanders of the Police Headquarters, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, and Local Police. The goal was to create a united front to intensify controls on the production, trade, and possession of fireworks.
Zero tolerance
The Prefecture assures that extensive checks will continue in the coming months, both in factories and shops. The aim is twofold: to ensure full compliance with regulations to prevent risks to public safety and to combat the illegal economy that thrives around this sector.
The message is clear: zero tolerance for those who jeopardize the safety of citizens for profit, with particular attention to protecting health, the environment, and animals.

It's important to monitor this situation regarding fireworks, but I wonder if the penalties are truly effective. Public safety must be a priority, but citizens also need accurate information.
