Winter delivers a double blow: snow alert up to the Po Valley and polar cold

First the "Norwegian Vortex," then the storm from Greenland: the mercury plummets, risking low-lying flakes and accumulations in the Apennines. The weather warning lasts until Tuesday.

Italy is in the crosshairs of a powerful double polar attack that will bring winter back early and with unexpected force. Until Monday, two distinct vortices of frigid air from the Arctic and Polar regions will pass over the peninsula, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and a high probability of snow down to very low altitudes, including the Po Valley.

The First Offensive: The Norwegian "Winter Vortex"

The first cyclone, nicknamed the "Winter Vortex" and originating from the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, is already approaching our country. As confirmed by Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it, this front is causing a deep low pressure system to form over the Ligurian Sea.

Today, Friday the 21st: Severe weather will be concentrated mainly in the north and along the Tyrrhenian coast, with widespread precipitation. The most critical aspect concerns snow: localized light snowfall is possible in the plains between Lombardy, Emilia, and Piedmont. Winds will be strong, and temperatures will drop sharply from north to south.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 22nd: The vortex will move toward the Tyrrhenian Sea, triggering severe weather in central and southern Italy. Heavy rain and, above all, heavy snowfall are expected, even down to hilly altitudes in Romagna (in the morning), Marche, Umbria, and even locally in Abruzzo and Molise. The Apennines are poised for a "full" load of fresh snow.

Brief truce and the second assault from Greenland

Sunday the 23rd will offer a brief, deceptive respite. We'll have plenty of clear skies and better weather, but with a downside: it will be bitterly cold. Low temperatures, aided by the starry night, will drop significantly below freezing in the North, even in the plains.

However, from the evening, the alert returns to maximum: the arrival of the second polar cyclone is looming, this time of Greenlandic origin.

Between Sunday night and Monday morning: The situation must be monitored carefully in the North, where new snowfall is feared even in the plains, although with light accumulations.

Monday: The bad weather will gradually extend to central and southern Italy, bringing disturbed and fully wintery conditions to much of the peninsula.

The forecasts in summary and the recovery

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise starting Tuesday afternoon, but the climate will remain unstable, with frequent and widespread rain. Further heavy rainfall is likely in the second half of next week, particularly in central and southern regions.

Authorities urge everyone to exercise extreme caution, especially regarding the possible formation of ice and the potential disruption caused by sudden snowfall in the lowlands.
