Trieste – A tragedy has shocked the community of Muggia. A 54-year-old woman of Ukrainian origin, resident in the Trieste municipality, has been arrested on charges of killing her nine-year-old son. The arrest occurred this morning following investigations conducted by the Flying Squad and the Forensic Police, who—according to the Police Headquarters—have little doubt about the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The alarm was raised around 22pm last night by the child's father, a 57-year-old man, who was unable to contact either the mother or his son, who was expected to be returned around 21pm.
When officers from the Muggia police station, along with firefighters, entered the home in Piazza Marconi, they found a horrifying scene: the lifeless body of the child, with deep stab wounds to the neck. The mother was nearby, in a state of shock and suffering from injuries to her limbs, likely self-inflicted in an attempt to take her own life.

Immediately entrusted to paramedics, the woman was transported to Cattinara Hospital. After receiving initial treatment, she will be transferred to the Trieste prison on Via Coroneo, where she is being held by judicial authorities. The investigation, coordinated by the Trieste Public Prosecutor's Office, is now attempting to clarify the motives behind this extreme act.
The family, supported for some time by the Social Services of the Municipality of Muggia, was experiencing a fragile situation, which was well known to the caregivers.
This morning, the mayor of Muggia, Paolo Polidori, declared a day of mourning. At 12:00 p.m., the entire town paused for a minute of silence in memory of the child. This gesture was also shared by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Council, meeting in Trieste, which observed a moment of silence for the young victim.

I don't understand how there can be so much suffering in the world, especially among the youngest. It's important that stricter screening be done on families in difficulty to prevent tragedies like this.
It's a truly sad story, but I wonder how something like this could happen. Families should be a place of love and protection for children, not of violence. Let's hope more can be done to help people in need.
