Naples – A massive and deep sinkhole opened up this morning along the busy Via Appia in the Naples area, in the crucial section affected by the controversial sewer construction project that affects the municipalities of Melito, Sant'Antimo, and Giugliano in Campania.

The road collapse, caused by heavy and persistent rains that are lashing the entire Naples metropolitan area, directly involved at least four passing cars. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but it did cause panic among motorists.

The episode was immediately relaunched by the Green and Left Alliance (AVS) MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, together with the Europa Verde representative Carlo Ceparano, who received an avalanche of reports, photos, and videos from shocked citizens and residents.

The outrage among politicians and residents has focused on the timing and manner of the collapse. "After approximately three years of construction and disruption," Borrelli and Ceparano jointly complained, "all it took was a bit of bad weather to bring everything down. This isn't an unexpected natural disaster, but the dramatic consequence of structures clearly unsuitable for weather events of this kind."

The finger is unequivocally pointed at the quality of the intervention and its exasperating slowness, the subject of previous inspections by the two representatives who define the works as "eternal construction sites".

Faced with what they call a "failure" and a "mortal risk to citizens," the two Green Party representatives have made a peremptory demand: the immediate intervention of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

"The fragility of this stretch of road, immediately after the completion of the work, is unacceptable," Borrelli and Ceparano thundered. The aim of the investigation is to ascertain the quality of the work performed, understand the causes of the slow operation, and identify the specific responsibilities that led to this "near-miss disaster."

"It is urgent," the representatives conclude, "to inspect all areas of the sewer before further collapses occur and put more people's lives at risk." The fear now is that the collapse is not an isolated case, but a symptom of a broader structural problem along the entire length of the sewer infrastructure.
