Tragedy at Marcianise School: 12-year-old student dies after falling down fire escape stairs

Marcianise– An inexplicable tragedy. A tragedy that silenced an entire city. Marcianise was plunged into a nightmare this morning when a 12-year-old student, Federica De Biase, lost her life after falling from the fire escape at her school, the Calcara Middle School on Via Novelli.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after classes began, turning a normal morning of studying into a worst-case scenario.

The dynamics and the alarm

According to an initial, fragmentary reconstruction still being examined by investigators, the young student, a second-grade student, left the classroom for reasons yet to be determined. She apparently reached the external structure of the fire escape, located at the rear of the school building.

From there, the fatal fall. A fall of about ten meters, leaving her with no escape, ended in the schoolyard.

Shortly thereafter, some classmates and school staff raised the alarm. The scene that first responders encountered was horrifying.

The desperate attempt of rescuers

An ambulance from 118 rushed to the scene within minutes.

Unfortunately, all efforts were in vain. The injuries sustained in the crash were too serious and the doctors could only pronounce the 12-year-old dead.

The area of ​​the tragedy was immediately cordoned off by police, who arrived on the scene to begin the forensic investigation necessary to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident. Officers are interviewing key witnesses—classmates, teachers, and school staff—in an attempt to understand what happened in the moments before the fall.

At this time, as confirmed by investigators, no hypothesis has been ruled out: from a tragic, unthinkable fatality—a loss of balance, a misstep—to other circumstances that investigators are examining with the utmost caution.

The mayor of Marcianise, Antonello Trombetta, and Deputy Mayor Salzillo, visibly shocked, also rushed to the scene of the tragedy to express the entire administration's sympathy to the family and the school community.

Shortly afterwards, Federica's mother also arrived on the scene, torn apart by incomprehensible grief.

The news quickly spread throughout the city, bringing shocked parents and tearful students outside the school gates. A climate of profound shock and disbelief now surrounds the Calcara school, which has suspended part of its teaching activities as a sign of mourning and to allow for the investigation to be conducted.
