Simply sitting at the top of the Premier League isn't enough. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are looking to strengthen their midfield for the title race, and they've targeted an old acquaintance of the English league in the January transfer window: Scott McTominay.
According to persistent reports from “Team Talk,” the Gunners are seriously considering an offer to snatch the Scottish midfielder from Napoli, a true lynchpin of the Azzurri team who arrived in 2024. A return home, across the Channel, which wouldn't scare the 28-year-old at all.
The heart in the Premier League and the Napoli wall
McTominay, acquired from Manchester United for around €30 million just over a year ago, has rediscovered in Naples the consistency and leading role he lacked in Manchester. His performances, characterized by dynamism, quality, and a crucial goal-scoring instinct, have made him an instant fan favorite.
But the lure of his homeland is strong. Sources close to the player suggest that a return to the Premier League would excite him, provided it's the right opportunity. "It's not about money," reveals an anonymous source with knowledge of the matter. "His heart still beats for the Premier League, but the right conditions must be in place: the right club, the right project, the right role on the pitch."
However, on the other side of the table sits a steely negotiator, president Aurelio De Laurentiis. And the message coming from Naples is crystal clear: a veritable "€80 million wall." The Azzurri have no intention of losing their cornerstone midway through the season.
Why Napoli says no (to less than 80 million)
Any offer below the €80 million threshold—a monstrous capital gain compared to the initial investment—would be considered unacceptable. Napoli has no need to sell and is building a medium- to long-term project in which McTominay is considered a key component.
The same source cited by "Team Talk" doubles down, explaining the club's position: "We're building something special here, Scott is doing great, why should we stop everything?"
The ball is now in Arsenal's court. The Gunners will have to decide whether to make a mind-blowing offer to convince Napoli to release their star player. This is a tense negotiation, with the player's desire on one side and the club's resolve on the other. The January transfer window is already shaping up to be a heated one.
