Naples – "Paolo" (not his real name), the patient suffering from a massive esophageal tumor saved by a surgical procedure that was extraordinary in its complexity and technique, will soon return to his normal life, with his loved ones nearby. The operation, a landmark in public surgery, was performed at Monaldi Hospital of the Colli Hospital by Professor Diego Cuccurullo's team.
The innovative procedure, a minimally invasive total esophagectomy, was performed entirely with the help of a robot. The real challenge, mastered by the surgeons, was reconstructing the removed organ: to do so, the team "modeled" the patient's stomach, creating a tube, which was then transferred into the chest to replace the diseased esophagus.
A precision technique that allowed Paolo to regain his normality with minimal physical impact: at the end of the surgery, only very small scars from the robotic accesses and a short incision in his neck remained on his body.
"This achievement is the fruit of standardization, teamwork, and ongoing training," stated Professor Cuccurullo, Director of General Surgery at Monaldi Hospital. "The robotic platform guarantees pinpoint precision, less invasiveness, less postoperative pain, and a faster recovery. A fully robotic procedure on such a large mass confirms the high level of our program."
The patient, whose post-operative course is uneventful, is being followed by a multidisciplinary team and is already on the road to full recovery.
Anna Iervolino, General Manager of the Colli Hospital, emphasized the significance of the operation: "This procedure stands out for its fully robotic approach and the size of the tumor treated, making it a case of technical and scientific importance. It is a concrete demonstration of our vision: investing in technology, expertise, and organization to ensure excellent care in the Public Health Service."

This article is very interesting, but I noticed it's a bit too informative. The part about organ reconstruction was well explained. I hope other patients can have the same success as Paolo. I've also heard about these innovative techniques.
