Naples – Tension and fear reign in Vomero, where an elderly couple was struck by a car while crossing the pedestrian crossing on Via Simone Martini. The accident occurred yesterday and caused the 93-year-old man serious injuries, who is now hospitalized with a red code and whose life is in danger. The injuries sustained by his wife, who was with him, are less serious, but still significant.
According to initial reports, the elderly couple was crossing the street as usual when the vehicle struck them. Unlike many similar incidents reported in the city in recent months, the driver of the car didn't flee: he immediately stopped, getting out of the car to offer assistance and alert emergency services.
A patrol from the Vomero section of the municipal police responded to the scene and seized the vehicle and revoked the driver's license, as required by law in the event of accidents involving serious injuries.

Officers are now working to reconstruct the precise details of the accident. Witness testimony, any footage from local security cameras, and technical tests will be crucial to determining the car's speed at the time of impact.
The incident reignites the debate about road safety in the neighborhood's pedestrian areas and, more generally, the need for structural interventions and awareness campaigns to reduce risks for the most vulnerable, such as the elderly and children.
