Naples - It looked like a new event was being planned in the city center, but instead a large-scale operation was underway in Piazza Plebiscito, attracting the attention of tourists and passersby.

A platform of the Civil Motorization, assembled by the police of the Napoli Centro Company, together with municipal police officers, transformed the city's monumental living room into a mobile checkpoint to identify modified e-bikes.

Many curious onlookers approached, asking the uniformed men for explanations, attracted by the presence of the machine. In reality, the checks concerned a now widespread phenomenon: supercharged e-bikes that, exceeding 25 km/h, effectively become mopeds, requiring insurance, a license plate, and a helmet.

Thanks to the platform—used first in Piazza Plebiscito and then in Piazza Dante—the technicians were able to precisely determine whether the vehicles had been tampered with, without any possibility of error. The device allows them to test speed, engine power, and any tampering with the security systems.

The operation, which also extended to the historic center, the Chiaia neighborhood, and the Spanish Quarter, resulted in the inspection of 120 electric vehicles. Twenty-nine were found to be illegal and were seized. The overall toll included 161 fines issued for traffic violations.

This is a significant result, investigators emphasize, which aims to combat an increasingly widespread phenomenon among riders, young people, and commuters: the use of e-bikes transformed into disguised scooters, posing safety risks for both riders and those traveling through Naples.
