Naples - These are days of palpable tension amid the dank alleys and ancient buildings of Naples' historic center. The hunt for Roberto Mazzarella, 47, a high-profile fugitive and a key figure in the Camorra, is intensifying.

Since he disappeared into thin air last January, investigators suspect he has never left his hometown, protected by a dense network of conspiracy and silence that envelops him like a shroud.

The investigative teams are literally breathing down his neck. The latest push to track him down two days ago saw the police engaged in relentless nighttime raids. The searches focused on two key areas: Via Cosenz in Case Nuove, a concrete maze where control is vital for the clans, and Via Cappiello in San Giorgio a Cremano, where his alleged presence had been recorded.

During the operation, the most sophisticated technology was deployed: night-vision drones flew over the streets, scrutinizing every shadow, every terrace, every nook and cranny. The objective was clear: to capture the last bigwig of the clan, a man wanted for over nine months. But the result was a frustrating stalemate.

There's no sign of the "Ghost." The investigators, however, aren't giving up. They know that being a fugitive is exhausting, and that sooner or later, the fugitive or one of the "excellent" aides covering for him will make the fatal mistake.

Who is the boss on the run?

Roberto Mazzarella is listed as a highly dangerous fugitive in Italy, a serious criminal profile. But he's not wanted for routine crimes: the charge hanging over his head is that of a brutal and, above all, innocent murder, aggravated by aiding and abetting a mafia conspiracy.

He is the nephew of historic clan leaders Ciro, Gennaro, and Vincenzo Mazzarella, and is considered the boss who inherited the group's criminal legacy in the early 2000s. He turned 47 in January, the month the warrant against him was issued (January 24, 2025), with his fugitive status arriving four days later (January 28).

In April, the Court of Naples even issued a European arrest warrant to broaden the scope of the hunt.

The murder of Antonio Maione: the innocent sacrificed

The legal case in which he is involved is a macabre chapter in the long-running feud between the Mazzarellas and their rivals, the Rinaldis (linked to the Secondigliano Alliance). The arrest warrant concerns the murder of Antonio Maione, a name that echoes the cruelty of the Camorra's transversal vendettas.

On September 15, 2000, Maione was ambushed and killed in a delicatessen in San Giovanni a Teduccio, eastern Naples. Two gunmen, arriving on a scooter, fired at least four fatal shots.

According to investigators' reconstruction—also supported by the statements of a cooperating witness—Roberto Mazzarella was the one who ordered the execution, and perhaps also the scooter driver, while Clemente Amodio, 45, is believed to be the actual perpetrator of the murder.

The motive is terrible and ruthless: the victim, Antonio Maione, was the brother of Ivan Maione, who confessed to the murder of Salvatore Mazzarella (Roberto's father and brother of the clan leaders) on May 28, 1995. Antonio, therefore, died to atone for his relative's guilt, a blood sacrifice in the ritual of the war between clans.

Mazzarella's position has been at the center of a complex legal tug-of-war in recent months. In May 2025, the Supreme Court of Cassation sensationally annulled the order and referred it back to the Review Court. In July, however, the Court of Cassation once again upheld it in its entirety. The subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court of Cassation was ultimately rejected, solidifying the prosecution's case.

The fugitive now faces the next step: the preliminary hearing, a prelude to the trial that awaits him. But before justice can take its course, the police must break the wall of silence that protects him, bringing to light Naples' new "Ghost" boss.

The situation in Naples is truly complicated, and the fact that Mazzarella has been a fugitive for so long suggests he has a lot of support. The Camorra has a very dense network of accomplices that makes it difficult to capture fugitives.
