Naples - An arrest was made by a police officer with a keen eye for prevention, even when in plainclothes. A 31-year-old Nigerian man, already known to law enforcement and an undocumented immigrant in Italy, was arrested yesterday afternoon as he rushed out of a building on Via Rua Catalana after an attempted burglary.

Investigators have reconstructed the incident. The man had broken into a home intending to rob. Discovered by the woman who was inside, he first violently pushed the victim to escape, then fled. In his panic, he only managed to steal a pair of shoes, which he had put in his backpack.

The escape, however, was halted after a few meters. By chance, he crossed paths with an officer from the Office for General Prevention and Public Rescue (UPPSG), who, although off-duty, was walking down that street. The officer's attention was caught by the desperate screams of a woman, who was trying to warn a friend down the street from her window, pointing out the man with the backpack.

The officer then subdued the suspect. The operation was not easy: the man resisted, resulting in a fight. Only with the timely arrival of a Guardia di Finanza patrol was it possible to neutralize him and arrest him.

The 31-year-old was then held at the police station for the crimes of improper robbery (theft with violence), assault, and resisting a public officer. The shoes were immediately returned to their rightful owner.
