Naples – Young Umberto Catanzaro, born in Naples on October 9, 2002, died last night in the intensive care unit of Pellegrini Hospital. The boy, who played amateur soccer, was seriously injured in a gunshot attack on September 15 in the Spanish Quarter.
This morning, Carabinieri from the Naples Central Company responded to the Pellegrini emergency room to confirm the death of the 22-year-old, who had never recovered from his injuries since that day.
The body was placed under seizure by order of the judicial authorities, pending an autopsy that will determine the precise cause of death and link it to the gunshot wounds suffered during the ambush.
According to the investigation, coordinated by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate and the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, the killers' true target was not Catanzaro. The young man was apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time, becoming an innocent victim of a score-settling plot within the clan of boss Salvatore Percich, who wanted to punish his daughter's boyfriend for distributing hot videos of the girl.
The investigative activities of the police The operations of the Naples Central Company's Operational Unit led to the execution of four arrests on suspicion of the crime and a precautionary detention order issued by the Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) and the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office on October 19th against five people believed to be involved in the ambush. Among those arrested is the mafia boss Percich, considered the instigator and perpetrator, along with his accomplices.
Investigators are charging the suspects, to varying degrees, with the crimes of attempted murder aggravated by the victim's death, illegal possession and carrying of a firearm, as well as the aggravating circumstance of mafia involvement. With the death of Umberto Catanzaro, the accusatory framework, already defined as serious at the time of the arrests, now becomes even worse for everyone.
