Naples – A nightmarish hospital stay, with specialist tests requiring sedation and solitary journeys that put safety at risk, occurred at the Policlinico Hospital, where a patient was forced to walk between wards, returning to the ward without assistance even after a serious drug spill.

The ordeal of a patient hospitalized for ten days at the Policlinico Hospital in Naples to undergo a series of invasive tests requiring sedation has shocked her family, who have decided to report the incident. The crux of the matter is the complete lack of care and logistical support provided to patients considered "vulnerable."

The woman was forced to walk alone from Pavilion 10 to Pavilion 18 to undergo the tests. A long and potentially risky journey for those hospitalized.

The situation escalated when, during one of the procedures, an injection of contrast fluid leaked out of the vein, causing "obvious swelling and edema in the patient's arm." Despite the obvious discomfort and injury, the woman was forced to return to the ward alone, without any staff member accompanying her.

When questioned about the incident, the doctors reportedly told their families that this practice is considered "normal." Patients in need of assistance can, theoretically, ask the on-duty guard to call a shuttle, but the service is almost always ineffective, with "very poor results."

The family's bitter outburst reached the ears of Alleanza Verdi Sinistra MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, to whom they entrusted the complaint.

"We wonder how it's possible that she had to walk from Wards 10 to 18 without any assistance," her family wrote. "Healthcare must be guaranteed to the sick, and their fragility and dignity must be protected."

MP Borrelli immediately responded to the appeal, emphasizing the gravity of the situation: "Hospitalized patients are vulnerable, and their safety must be the priority at all times." He added that "a patient wandering alone from one ward to another on foot could encounter any unforeseen event, regardless of their emotional and psychological state."

The episode of the drug injected intravenously, followed by the patient's solitary return to the ward, is proof of a healthcare system that, in this case, failed to "guarantee the safety of those entrusted to the care of a hospital."

The complaint now highlights the need for more rigorous protocols to protect patients during the delicate diagnostic and therapeutic process within large hospital facilities.

It's incredible how a hospital lacks patient care, especially the most vulnerable. It shouldn't be normal for someone to move around alone. Conditions should be improved to protect the dignity of patients.
