Naples - The situation between Piazza Dante and Piazza Bellini, the heart of Neapolitan nightlife, has become "intolerable and totally out of control," according to a reader of Cronache della Campania, who describes a climate of fear now commonplace among residents, business owners, and tourists.

For months, gangs of people have been robbing passersby in broad daylight and in the dead of night, stealing phones, wallets, and other personal items. The attacks are carried out quickly and decisively: they approach, distract, and flee in moments. The victims, often tourists or young people who frequent local clubs and bars, only realize the theft when it's too late.

"The thefts are constant, aggressive, and carried out with impressive confidence, as if they knew they could act without any risk," the reader reports. "People are walking around calmly and, suddenly, they find themselves without their phones or wallets. It's no longer a simple report: it's an alarm."

The alarm: the area is unsafe

The increasingly widespread fear is that the area has been effectively "abandoned to security," with checks perceived as sporadic and insufficient given the sheer volume of people that crowd the streets between Piazza Dante, Port'Alba, Piazza Bellini, and the surrounding side streets every evening. "We're talking about one of the most central and busiest areas of the city," the report continues, "and it's unacceptable that it's been reduced to this state."

According to several witnesses, the perpetrators are primarily groups of young people, often stationed at high-traffic areas, who appear to have specific roles: some observing, some approaching the victim, some covering the escape. "They give the impression of being organized, perhaps manipulated by someone, and above all, they show no fear," the reader adds.

The request, addressed to law enforcement and institutions, is clear: "I demand immediate intervention, with permanent patrols and constant checks, because it is unacceptable that a central and crowded area of the city should be reduced to these conditions. People have the right to walk without the fear of being robbed."

The complaint is part of a broader context of critical issues related to nightlife in various areas of Naples, where the mix of nightlife, alcohol, degradation, and petty crime creates fertile ground for predatory crime. Piazza Dante and Piazza Bellini, symbolic locations of cultural and youth life, thus risk becoming "red zones" for those who live there and those who frequent them.

Once again, a citizen raises a problem that many are aware of but few officially discuss. Nightlife is a resource for the city, but without security, it turns into a nightmare: crowded streets, packed venues, and, at the same time, fast hands taking advantage of the chaos. If the message being conveyed is that in certain areas "anything goes," the risk is that lawlessness will be normalized and the very people who bring the historic center to life will be pushed out: families, students, and tourists.

The appeal and request from local residents and business owners is for more visible controls, coordination between law enforcement and the municipality, effective lighting and video surveillance, but also a clear stance: the city cannot surrender to the "it's always been this way" mentality. Piazza Dante and Piazza Bellini must return to being places of encounter and culture, not hunting grounds for petty crime.
