Naples – Yesterday morning, a 25-year-old man originally from Nigeria unleashed chaos in Piazza del Gesù, threatening unsuspecting tourists and then attempting to attack Italian Army soldiers involved in Operation Safe Streets.

The episode, which culminated in his arrest, refocuses the spotlight on urban safety and the daily challenges facing law enforcement.

It all started when a man in a clearly mentally impaired state, perhaps under the influence of drugs, began terrorizing passersby. Brandishing a sharp nail and a heavy cobblestone as improvised weapons, the 25-year-old intimidated a group of tourists, shouting threats, forcing them to flee in panic.

The man was identified by a patrol of the Italian Army who, during the patrolling of the square (service active 24 hours a day) had noticed him with an attitude particularly aggressive. It was blocked and neutralized by adopting the required MCM (Military Combat Method) procedures.

Subsequently, once the threat had been neutralized, the military proceeded to request the intervention of the State Police, who, arriving on the scene shortly thereafter, took custody of the individual, already restrained and rendered harmless by the military, for subsequent activities within their jurisdiction.

Army soldiers, who were patrolling the area to ensure the city's tranquility. Officers from the Office of General Prevention and Public Aid, supported by the Dante Police Station, stopped the young man and arrested him for resisting a public official.
