Naples – It's not yet time for toasts, but fireworks—the dangerous and prohibited kind—are already making headlines. Just over a month before New Year's Eve, the Carabinieri of the Naples Provincial Command have launched a series of targeted checks to combat the production and sale of illegal fireworks.
The first significant seizure occurred a few hours ago in the Soccavo neighborhood, where a 28-year-old from Afragola was arrested while transporting a veritable arsenal of explosives on his scooter.
In the trunk of the vehicle, officers from the Naples Rione Traiano station found 48 homemade "Rambo" explosive devices, deadly, unapproved pyrotechnic devices with extremely high destructive potential. The total weight of the material exceeded 1.5 kilograms of explosives: enough, according to the bomb disposal experts who responded to the scene, to cause serious damage or even blow up the entire vehicle.
The operation, conducted with the support of the bomb disposal unit of the Naples Investigative Command, also extended to the young man's home, located in Afragola.

The 28-year-old was arrested on charges of illegal possession of explosives and ammunition, while he and his cohabiting father were charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The man was placed under house arrest pending a summary hearing.
The incident marks the start of the annual prevention campaign aimed at nipping illegal firecrackers in the bud as the holidays approach. This dangerous tradition, despite appeals and checks, continues to claim lives and injuries.
Interventions like this are essential to prevent tragedies that, unfortunately, recur all too frequently at the end of the year. The goal of law enforcement is to remove home-made explosive devices capable of causing death from the streets.

It's a strange thing that happens this time of year: checks for illegal fireworks are important, but often they're not enough. People continue to use dangerous fireworks without considering the risks they pose to everyone's safety.
