Naples - Mario Monticelli, the 42-year-old robber who allegedly committed three robberies and attempted a fourth in the space of 24 hours last week, terrorizing shopkeepers and hospitality workers in central Naples, has been jailed.
On Friday afternoon, the State Police arrested him on suspicion of crime. The man, with a criminal record, was considered a serious suspect in the crimes of aggravated robbery and attempted robbery.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the first incident occurred on November 20th, on Via Aquila. The man allegedly entered a CAF (Tax Assistance Center) and, after violently assaulting the owner, stole €20 in cash, a ring belonging to the victim, and her cell phone, before fleeing.
On the same day, the suspect allegedly struck again, this time in a hotel in Piazza Garibaldi.

The third incident occurred on Friday morning, at a hotel on Via Torino. According to the documents, the 42-year-old first threatened the receptionist with a broken bottle and then attacked her with kicks and punches, managing to steal €50 from the reception cash register.
Shortly thereafter, again on Friday morning, the man allegedly attempted another robbery at a tobacco shop in Vico Gabella. Having entered the shop with the clear intent of stealing cash and other valuables, he allegedly threatened the owner, but was chased away by the woman's husband, who intervened to defend him.
The State Police investigation focused on the descriptions provided by the victims and the images recorded by the video surveillance systems of local businesses. By cross-referencing these elements with additional investigative information, officers gathered serious evidence against the 42-year-old, believed to be responsible for the alleged involvement in the four incidents.
The man was finally located shortly after the attempted robbery, in Piazza Sant'Egidio, where he was arrested on suspicion of the crime.

The situation in Naples is very worrying, but I wonder how one person could commit so many robberies in such a short time without being stopped first. Law enforcement must do more to ensure the safety of its citizens.
