Naples - Work has officially begun on the new Piazza Cavour metro station, one of Naples' most strategic public transportation hubs. Line 2, a historic infrastructure for the city's mobility, is entering a phase of extensive redevelopment thanks to the interventions planned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Group), the initial works of which are funded with resources from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Following the opening of construction sites in Piazza Amedeo, Mergellina, and Montesanto, the fourth area is now underway: Piazza Cavour, already the center of intense traffic between the Sanità district, the Archaeological Museum, and the Via Foria axis. The first activities will involve moving underground utilities and resolving interference, essential tasks before the actual construction begins.
The initial phase involves demolishing the traffic island on Via Foria, between Via Stella and Via Duomo. Work will be carried out exclusively at night, advancing approximately 40 meters at a time and without interrupting traffic: two lanes in each direction will be guaranteed. This first phase will last approximately two weeks.
Subsequently, once the traffic system has been reorganized, the pedestrian area in front of the station, between Via Porta San Gennaro and Via Stella, will be redesigned, as well as the Parco Totò area, on the side facing the Sanità district. The kiosks in the square will not be affected by the work, and the pedestrian paths to the unaffected areas and the station entrances will be maintained.
Some temporary changes will affect local public transport: the ANM bus stop towards the Museum will be suspended, while the taxi ranks will be moved along Via Foria, near the pedestrian crossing on Via Porta San Gennaro.
The overall duration of the preparatory works is set for six months. "Improving rapid mass transit is one of the central objectives of this Administration," explain City Councilors Laura Lieto and Edoardo Cosenza. "We have shared a complex project with RFI that today allows us to open the fourth construction site dedicated to the modernization of Line 2."
The project is part of a broader strategy to regenerate railway hubs that serve as metropolitan hubs, with the aim of restoring stations to a central role in the urban fabric: recognizable, accessible, and integrated places, capable of offering services and bridging distances within a changing city.

They could have done it at other times, because December is already a mess, if you add something else to it...
Angelo Buonomo Sir: You forget bureaucratic obligations! It could have even happened on Epiphany!!
Really!☺
Vincenzo Nasti and it was done in other periods then, or it was done before
It's right that something be done to improve the transportation situation. But I wonder if there will be enough information for residents during the work, because sometimes the communications are unclear.
I hope this work doesn't cause too many traffic problems, as there are already so many traffic jams in Naples. In any case, it's good to finally see some progress on the subway; it's really needed.
And it's great news that work has begun on the new Piazza Cavour station. We hope everything goes according to plan and that there won't be too much inconvenience for residents and travelers, but improving services is important.
