Naples – A lightning theft and chase took place yesterday evening in Naples, with the epilogue in via Poerio where the Police State police arrested a 26-year-old Moroccan man already known to law enforcement. The man was arrested for aggravated theft and resisting arrest after stealing an electric bicycle in Piazza Garibaldi.
The operation was triggered when officers from the Vicaria-Mercato Police Station, engaged in territorial control, noticed a cyclist speeding the wrong way on Via Poerio. The suspicious behavior didn't go unnoticed by the officers: upon seeing the patrol car, the driver accelerated sharply in an attempt to escape the officers.
A brief but frantic chase ensued through the neighborhood streets. The police managed to catch up with him and, after a struggle, subdue him. The man physically resisted before being finally subdued.
Immediate investigations allowed the investigators to reconstruct the theft. The 26-year-old had stolen the e-bike a few minutes earlier in Piazza Garibaldi, after forcing and damaging the safety chain protecting it. This swift action, however, did not guarantee his impunity.
The bicycle was immediately returned to its rightful owner, while the thief was arrested. The arrest represents the latest law enforcement intervention in the area around the central station, an area closely monitored to combat the theft of bicycles and electric vehicles, which is increasingly common in the Campania capital.
