Naples – From a symbol of industrial archaeology to the epicenter of urban decay. The former factory on Via Brin, once the productive heart of eastern Naples, is now a crumbling ruin that threatens public safety and fuels a climate of fear.
MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of the Green and Left Alliance, raised a new alarm about the situation: "We are faced with yet another case of total neglect and institutional irresponsibility," he said. "The building has become an open-air landfill and a haven for drug addicts and homeless people."
The privately owned structure, which partially collapsed between last spring and autumn, is in dire condition. Since the 1980s, after the industrial operations closed, no one has attempted maintenance. Today, what remains of the factory is a static hazard, leading to the seizure and closure of Traversa Brin, causing inconvenience to residents and motorists.
Despite the seizure and seals, the situation has deteriorated. The building's skeleton has been occupied illegally: homeless people are camping inside, many of whom—according to residents' complaints—use drugs and engage in petty crime. "At night," residents say, "you hear noises, screams, and see suspicious movements. We're afraid to walk by, even during the day."
Borrelli points the finger at the municipality's inertia and the owners' inaction, who have allowed the structure to rot for decades. "It's unacceptable for a dangerous building to become a refuge and a threat to local residents. The municipality must act, clean up and secure the site, but also sanction those responsible for its abandonment," the MP attacks.
The MP also announced a new initiative: "I will submit an urgent inquiry to find out what enforcement action the Administration intends to take against the owners and what timeframe it expects for the area to be permanently secured. Via Brin must be returned to its residents."
Meanwhile, residents continue to live with a landscape of rubble, decay, and fear, while the former factory remains a bitter symbol of a Naples that forgets its places and lets its pieces of history rot.

This is a very worrying situation; the structure is truly dangerous and abandoned. The residents deserve a safe place to live without fear. I hope the City takes serious and swift action to resolve this issue.
