The second-degree trial for one of the murders that most shocked the city: the assassination of Francesco Pio opens tomorrow, Thursday 6 November, before the fifth criminal section of the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Naples. maimone.

The main defendant is Francesco Pio Valda, the 21-year-old "baby boss" who was already sentenced to life in prison in the first instance. Also on trial with him are a group of relatives and friends—Alessandra Clemente (cousin), Salvatore Mancini, Giuseppina Niglio (grandmother), and Pasquale Saiz—all sentenced to lesser sentences for related crimes.

The Mergellina tragedy

The incident dates back to the night between March 19 and 20, 2023. Francesco Pio Maimone, a young pizza chef described by everyone as an honest and hard-working boy, was with friends at the chalets in Mergellina.

That evening, according to the prosecutor's reconstruction and confirmed by the first-instance ruling, a fight broke out between rival criminal groups. Maimone was there by chance, completely uninvolved in those criminal dynamics.

In the chaos of the brawl, Francesco Pio Valda pulled out a gun and fired.

A stray bullet struck Maimone squarely in the heart, killing him instantly. A senseless death, it sparked a wave of indignation and refocused the spotlight on youth violence and clan feuds for territorial control.

The father's appeal: "A punishment that serves as a warning."

On the eve of the first appeal hearing, the Maimone family, assisted by lawyer Sergio Pisani, renews its demand for justice.

"Francesco Pio has been missing from his family for 32 months," said Antonio Maimone, the victim's father. "That night in Mergellina, he lost his life to a bullet fired by a peer, leaving him with no chance of escape."

The father's words are full of pain but also a firm plea for justice: "We place our hope entirely in the judiciary, and we turn to the Judge, asking for an exemplary sentence. Francesco Pio will not return to the affection of his loved ones, but an exemplary sentence can serve as a warning to the young people of this society, which needs support and change."

In addition to the family, the Municipality of Naples (with lawyer Marco Buzzo) and the Polis Foundation (with lawyer Celeste Giliberti) also joined the trial as civil parties, testifying to the profound impact the affair has had on the entire community.

It's important that justice be served in this case, but also that the causes of these tragic events be understood. We hope the trial can lead to a solution for all those involved.
