"Creative" parking is a notorious practice in Italian cities, but in Palma Campania, things have gone a step further. Here, parking violations are no longer the result of individual drivers' indiscipline, but have been institutionalized, complete with white lines. The result? A sidewalk effectively transformed into an authorized parking lot, to the complete detriment of pedestrian safety.
The incredible incident occurred on Via Nuova Nola. As documented by a series of photographs, the parking spaces were painted over a large portion of the sidewalk. Not just a smear of paint, but a veritable invasion that negates their primary function. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the lines end close to curbs and ditches, making it impossible for anyone to pass, especially disabled people in wheelchairs or parents with strollers, who are forced to step onto the roadway and risk their safety.
This "urban planning" decision clearly violates the Highway Code, which categorically prohibits parking on sidewalks. This isn't a mistake, but a decision that prioritizes the need for parking over citizen safety. A local resident raised the issue, sending all the photographic documentation to the Green-Left Alliance MP, Francesco Emilio Borrelli.

The MP acted immediately, announcing that he had initiated procedures to request urgent intervention from the Palma Campania municipal administration and the relevant authorities to restore legality and common sense.
"It's intolerable that parking needs are met at the expense of pedestrian safety and rights, especially the most vulnerable," Borrelli said. "The sidewalk has only one function: to ensure the free and safe circulation of all.
We demand the immediate removal of these parking spaces and the restoration of legality on Via Nuova Nola. The Municipality cannot authorize such a blatant violation of the Highway Code. We now await a swift response from the local administration, called upon to address this abuse that transforms a public space into an authorized hazard.

It's incredible how in some cities they can allow sidewalks to be so crowded, not just for pedestrians but also for people with disabilities. The authorities must do something before an accident occurs.
