For three years, he allegedly hid his mother's mummified body in the basement of his home to continue collecting her pension. A surreal and disturbing story uncovered by the local police in Borgo Virgilio, in the Mantua area, led to the investigation by a 57-year-old nurse.
The man came under scrutiny after appearing at the Registry Office disguised as a woman, attempting to renew his mother's identity card, who had been deceased for some time. Municipal staff, suspicious of his appearance and recognizing him, decided to schedule a second appointment, while also notifying law enforcement.
The disguise at the counter and the suspicions
According to La Voce di Mantova's reconstruction, a few days ago, the 57-year-old showed up at the registry office dressed in women's clothing, a wig, and makeup, pretending to be his elderly mother. This ploy didn't convince the clerk, who apparently recognized him and, without raising alarm, arranged for him to be checked again.
Yesterday morning, at the second meeting, the truth came out: local police officers were waiting for him. Once they realized he'd been discovered, the man reportedly felt unwell and was taken to the emergency room.

The discovery of the body in the cellar
While the 57-year-old was being rescued, a patrol went to his home. In the basement, officers found his mother's mummified body. According to the coroner's initial assessment, she died of natural causes in 2022.
However, further tests will be necessary to clarify every detail.
Investigators believe that the son hid the body to continue receiving the old woman's pension, which he had been collecting regularly for three years.
The man is now under investigation for concealment of a corpse, fraud against the National Institute of Social Security (INPS), impersonation, and false pretenses. Authorities are carefully reconstructing the details of the incident over the past few years, including the financial transactions related to his pensions.
An event that has shaken the Mantua area, revealing a web of desperation, deceit, and loneliness, destined to be the subject of discussion for a long time to come.
