Afragola - The atmosphere in some suburbs increasingly resembles that of a land left adrift, where predatory crime fears neither witnesses nor cameras.
Episodes of violence that until a few years ago would have been confined to Western fiction now occur in broad daylight, in crowded areas, and before everyone's eyes. The line between everyday life and fear is blurred, and a simple gesture—like returning to the car to get the groceries—is enough to find yourself in a nightmare scene.
It happened in Afragola on Wednesday, November 26, around noon, in the Lidl parking lot. A couple had arrived at the supermarket to stock up on supplies when the man, standing a few steps away from his partner, was attracted by suspicious movements near a stopped car. Within seconds, those movements escalated into a direct threat: one of the thieves pointed a gun at him, ordering him to leave.
"Shut up, go away. We're stealing the car." No hesitation, no fear of being seen. In shock, the man managed to re-enter the supermarket, but terror did the rest: he fainted in front of the customers.
The desperate wife called for help in the corridors while those present alerted 118. While the thieves disappeared as easily as they had arrived, a traumatized victim and an entire community more vulnerable remained on the ground.
The couple, still shaken, decided to turn to Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of the Green-Left Alliance party, who has long been denouncing the rise in violence and the lack of oversight in the area.

"An armed attack during rush hour confirms that entire neighborhoods have become criminal safe zones," says Borrelli. "Citizens live in constant insecurity, while armed gangs roam undisturbed.
It's not a Western movie: it's a city left without tools and personnel. The promises of new law enforcement positions have remained on paper, and the staffing isn't even enough to replace those retiring.
For the MP, the situation is now beyond the pale and requires immediate intervention: "Security cannot be a mirage. We need an urgent strengthening of law enforcement, a presence on the ground, and real resources. We cannot allow citizens to feel like they're being held hostage by someone walking around with a gun in their pocket in broad daylight."
The Afragola affair thus becomes yet another crack in a system struggling to protect its residents. And while the uneasy silence of those who witnessed the violence too closely remains, the debate about what kind of city we want to inhabit in the coming years is growing.
