Poggiomarino – It's an evening like any other, with darkness enveloping the neighborhood of Via Nuova San Marzano. It's 9:00 PM sharp, when the red numbers of a digital alarm clock on the bedside table dimly illuminate a bedroom.

But that light isn't the only source of glare: two flashlights flicker between the drawers, while unknown hands grab money and jewelry, stuffing them into a makeshift sack.

The homeowner, unaware of everything, returns home tired from the day. He inserts the key into the lock and, opening the door, encounters a nightmare: two thieves in action, right in the heart of his apartment.

One of the thieves runs away, vanishing into the night, but the other doesn't hesitate. He grabs a screwdriver and points it menacingly at the man, ready to defend his loot.

Here, however, the story takes an unexpected turn. The victim, a local resident, is undaunted. With admirable composure, he reacts by physically blocking the intruder, preventing him from escaping.

The thief was stopped by the owner who returned early

As he tightens his grip, he feverishly dials 112 on his phone, calling for help from the police"I have a burglar in my house, come immediately!" he shouts to the switchboard, transforming a moment of terror into a heroic act.

Officers from the San Giuseppe Vesuviano station arrived within minutes, storming the home. The 52-year-old man from Boscotrecase, already known to law enforcement for previous crimes, was immobilized and handcuffed on suspicion of aggravated robbery.

The fugitive accomplice, however, remains untraceable for now, but investigations are ongoing to identify him through surveillance cameras and testimonies from neighbors.

The incident once again highlights the risks of petty crime in the Vesuvius suburbs, where burglaries are up 15% compared to last year, according to provincial data. The owner's prompt action not only saved his belongings but also averted a potential tragedy: a courageous act that could inspire others not to give in to fear.
